BSF stands for Border Security Force and it was established after the India-Pakistan War of 1965. Prior to 1965, the border between India and Pakistan was guarded by the State Armed Police Battalion. During the war of 1965, Pakistan invaded Sardar Post, Chhar Bet, and Beria Bet on 9th April 1965 in Kutch. The war revealed the insufficiency of the State Armed Police Battalion to fight with the aggressive armed forces of Pakistan. Therefore the Government of India realized that it would be more protected if the security of the border is endowed upon a centralized force in stead of a distributed force. Thus was born BSF on December 01, 1965 with the motto "Duty Unto Death".
2) Training of Border Security Force in India :
The training of BSF personnel is one of the toughest training in the world. BSF jawans go through numerous strenuous levels during their training period. This includes drilling, marching, weapon handling, firing, AT classes, crawling through swampy lands, jumping over fire, manipulation of venomous animals and pernicious insects and so on. On completion of their training they become one of the finest fighting soldiers in the world. They provide safeguards in the India-Pakistan border in the Thar Desert where temperature soars beyond 50 degree centigrade and Jammu and Kashmir where the temperature slumps below zero. Similarly, in India-Bangladesh border they have to deal with deep and thick forest peppered with poisonous insects and ferocious animals like Bengal Tiger. Therefore they are trained depending on the location they are deployed.

The BSF personnel are trained in patrolling the border be it on camel back, on horse back, on boat, on foot or on helicopters. BSF has three Main training Institutions, five Special Training Schools and Eleven Subsidiary Training Centres (STCs) / Basic Training Centres (BTCs) spread across the country.
3) Duties Performed By Border Security Force :
The security or defence services of India can be widely divided into two categories. One that is controlled by the Home Ministry and the other by the Central Government of whom the President of India is the Commander in chief. BSF, COAST GUARD, CISF, CRPF etc falls under the Home Ministry. Surprisingly BSF is the only CAPF with its own Air Wing, Marine Wing, Canine Wing, own cavalry and its training centres and R&D Institutions. The duties of Border Security Force in India are as follow :
• To maintain the peace and harmony among the dwellers near the border.
• To keep up the sanctity of the border by maintaining an eternal and steady vigilance.
• To obstruct any kind of illegal activities in the border area such as smuggling of narcotics, contrabands, heroins etc.
• Effectively dealing with internal security challenges tasked by the government whenever so.
• Preventing trans border crimes, unauthorized infiltration into or exit from the Indian territories.
• To responsibly perform special tasks connected with intelligence such as raids. These tasks are endowed upon the BSF Units by the Army in a war situation as per necessity.
• Guarding the prisoners held victims in the war.
• Maintaining the law and order in enemy territory administrated under the supervision of Army.
4) Current State of Border Force in India :
The BSF in India is one of the largest and finest fighting soldiers in the world established on December 01 1965 with a few battalions and now it reached out to 186 battalions with more than 2,40,000 personnel. The BSF is known as First Wall of Defence of Indian territories and it is among few border forces to possess its own air swing, water swing, artillery swing, commando units, canine and camel units. "Any task, Anytime, Anywhere" -- is the ideal of BSF jawans. At present BSF guards the Borders of India attached to Bangladesh and Pakistan. Remarkably, the border between India and Myanmar is protected by Assam Rifles. The present head of BSF is K K Sharma since 29 February, 2016. The head of BSF is known as Director General (DG). The DG should be from Indian Police Service (IPS).

5) Conclusion :
The importance of BSF in ensuring the security of the border and maintaining peace within the nation along with its border is of paramount value. Despite all difficulties and adversities they throw away all the grievances just to serve their motherland and protect the people within. They are that kind of brave soldiers who can even sacrifice their lives for the sake of the nation. Till date 1733 brave jawans sacrificed their lives while on duty and made themselves the noble martyrs of India. We are really proud to have such kind of lion-hearted men who are protecting us day and night. But it is a matter of great regret that we often complain about our job while sitting in Air Conditioned rooms for hours. We do not think at that time of those brave soldiers who work hard amidst severe and extreme climates just to keep ourselves safe.
