Indian Education System Problems

Indian Education System Problems

Introduction :

Since the dawn of human civilization education has become a part and parcel of our daily life. For the importance of proper education in today's world is very high. A proper education shapes a man's character as well as makes him a good responsible citizen for the future. Without education and etiquette a man is no less than a beast.

The ancient education in India rises from Gurukul (hermitage) where the pupils would have to take education from their gurus (teachers) staying in touch with them at their hermitages for a certain period of time. It was residential in nature. The education the pupils got in that time was very strict and rule-oriented and they had to obey their teachers in every sphere of their lives.

But now it is a matter of wonder that the level of Indian education has slumped to a quite lower degree. When compared to the foreign countries, India gets beaten worse in the field of education. The countries of UK, US, Gulf countries, Japan, China etc has made the education not only a medium of sustenance but also a great way for shaping a man's character. But why Indian fails? Why Indian students can't take the full advantage of education? Today in this article I'll have a discussion on the difference between 'Indian and Foreign education system' and the steps can be taken to reform them positively.

Difference Between Indian and Foreign Education System

There are scores of difference why foreign education system is much more better than India. I made here 10 differences out of them.

Indian education system

#1. The biggest difference between Indian and foreign education is that in India education is predominantly theoretical. Whereas in foreign countries, they focus more on practical elements. If they read something in the books, that is implemented in real life. It is one of the biggest reason why India lacks creativity.

#2. Indian education system encourages only acquiring more and more knowledge without any wisdom. But in foreign countries, education is looked upon as a way of acquiring wisdom.

#3. Extra curriculum activities in Indian education system is very ill. India only stresses on studies whether you understand them or not. On the other hand foreign countries provide everything from arts to sports along with studies. Australia stresses on playing arenas - such as cricket, hockey, boxing and so on; US focuses on arts, music, theatre and sports along with studies.

#4. In Japan, the schools do not take any exam until they reach grade four, the age of 10. The aim of the schools for the first 3 years is not to judge the child's knowledge but to cultivate good manners and characters in him/her. Besides, the schools also teach the students to be respectful for others, be empathetic and gentle with animals and nature. In India, the schools start taking exams from the time of admission. They believe the admission does judge the child's knowledge and surprisingly many a times it is very unfair. Indian schools primarily prioritize knowledge rather than manners.

#5. In India the students are not given any scope to opt for their subject of field of interest. Parents are hugely responsible for this. They insist that their children must become doctors or engineers! But foreign countries don't cherish this mentality. They allow the students to choose the field as per their interest. They also support them and provide necessary assistance so that a child can achieve his /her dream positively.

#6. Indian studies pressurize the students to remember a gigantic among of facts and figures starting from birth and death dates of freedom fighters, to mathematics formulas, to loads of other information and so on. For such pressure of studies the students sometimes even fall sick. But have a look at foreign! Their ways of teaching are not to squeeze the pupils brains with huge stuffs. They learn through hands-on implementation of their knowledge.

#7. Another major difference between Indian and foreign education system is that Indians believe only in grades and certificates. That is the more grades and certificates you bring in, the more you are considered to be brilliant. To be frank, Indian education system is bogusly marks-oriented. Foreign countries believe in efficiency. They hardly care about your grades and certificates. All they do is just they examine what the child learnt during his/her schooling period.

#8. In some foreign countries students have to clean their own classrooms, playgrounds and even toilets as a part of the education. This is done only to instil the sense of cleanliness in them. Whereas in India, cleaning is far-away matter; students are madly desperate on how to waste public properties including smearing their own classrooms and washrooms. Cleanliness to them is a matter of mere cock and bull story. Yes, it is true!

#9. Some foreign countries provide free primary education to kids as a part of law. This policy has been implemented to stop child labour and encourage the parents to give their children the basic education. In India education has swelled up as a good source of income. People are doing business in the name of teaching. Moreover, the teachers are not skilled and lack the minimum level of education. That is why the Indian students are also in a terrible need of systematic education.

#10. Lastly, Indian educational curriculum is very old and backdated. They repeat the same old syllabus every year. The syllabus is not up-to-date with the latest information on technology or sports or culture or arts and so on. Apart from this many wrong information is also sometimes included in the syllabus. The foreign system is not like this. Foreigners keep updating their educational syllabus with the latest trends and technologies which are developed. And that is the very difference why the foreign universities draw more and more international students from all over the world than Indian universities.

My Opinion Regarding The Difference Between Indian Education and Foreign Education

Assessing the above discussion we see that the education that foreign countries provide is much more superior compared to the education provided by India. Foreigners give the students enough scopes for developing their creativities, building up sound characters and manners, improving skills and above all for emboldening practical knowledge rather than theoretical one.

We all know that India is a developing country. The main reason why Indians can't avail themselves of an effective education is that there is not any sufficient infrastructure, good funding, and above all the parents are very orthodox in nature. If parents want to impose their own will on their children, then how the dormant potentialities of the children will evolve themselves successfully? Parents are just confining the independent will of their children. If anyone have had seen the movie "Taare Zameen Par", he/she would have understood better, I guess. It is a very good movie that everyone should watch.

Steps That Can Be Taken by the Government to Improve Education System in India

In India, only 75% students are in possession of formal education. Compared to the other developed countries, this number is trivial or not so good. The developed countries utilize the maximum share of the GDP in the education and health section. The statistics of formal education in these countries are beyond 90%. A number of steps can be taken by the Government and universities to improve the education pattern in India.

1. Refurbishment of Old Syllabus :

The major reason why Indian educational institutions fail to compete with foreign institutions is that India has an peculiar obsession for the very old syllabus. They teach the pupils every year the monotonous same syllabus which have no up-to -date information about the modern world. This aversion for adopting new syllabus triggers the Indian students to be unable to secure a suitable place in the leading world-class organizations.

To improve this plight of Indian education system, the government and the university authorities as well as the private school authorities should focus more on the development of the syllabus at least for the sake of the students' future.

2. Educating The Parents :

A large portion of Indians live in slums and rural areas. Most of them are not well-educated. That is why they do not encourage their children to relish on education. The government should arrange necessary steps to educate these parents so that they encourage their children for taking education and prevent them from dropping out from schools and colleges.

3. Establishing More Technical Institutions :

We all know that technology in today's modern generation has occupied a very considerable size on our mind. Its effect is havoc on the students. Most of them are interested in technology and this mentality can further shape their careers if they are trained a bit well via some technical institutions. The bigger companies and organizations are in search of highly-skilled people who have a good knowledge on technology. The government should focus on making more technical institutions all over India and help the students showcase their potentialities in today's world.

4. Training The Teachers in Proper Way :

Teachers play a very pivotal role in shaping the students' future. For what the teachers will teach, the students will learn the same. But unfortunately India is notorious for producing unskilled and amateur teachers who even do not have the basic education and training. What a horrible truth! The government should be more and more vigilant regarding this burning issue and should make necessary arrangements to provide the teachers with only genuine and up-to-date information.

5. Career-based Good Counselling :

One of the most important steps the government and the educational institutions authorities should immediately adopt is to start giving good career counselling. Most of the students face difficulties after they have completed their 12th standard in India. At that point they need a good counselling on their careers so that they can find the right colleges for themselves. A good counsellor can lead a student to choose their perfect career for themselves. It is just like bread and butter in our daily fares.

So here basically I have given some steps that the government and other educational authorities should pursue minutely to give the indian education system a fresh start. Besides, the modern students are looking for the world-class organizations which will provide them the practical and perfect teaching guidelines so that they can enrich their wisdom and develop their potentialities.
Thank you.
